ABOUT

Silja Yvette (* 1986) studied fine arts at Hochschule für Bildende Künste – Städelschule in Frankfurt, architecture at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences and philosophy at FernUniversität in Hagen. Her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Germany and abroad, most recently at Galerie Arimont as part of European Month of Photography Berlin, at Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes in Lisbon during Imago Lisboa Photo Festival, and at Haus am Kleistpark Berlin Art Award. In 2019, she was nominated for the prestigious Edward Steichen Award in Luxembourg. Her monograph Season of Admin (Kerber) was selected for the „Longlist of Most Beautiful German Books 2018“. Collective Creatures (Hatje Cantz) won the Deutsche Fotobuchpreis in Silver. In 2023, she is a participant in the Goldrausch project for woman artist.

Silja Yvette’s artistic interest focuses on social processes of innovation and exnovation—the emergence and dissolution of infrastructures, technologies, products and practices. She takes an admiring yet critical look at the space, time and resource consuming expansion of things. Her extensive photographic series, her object images and installations arise from the tensions between nature, the human need for invention and the social interactivity of the invented. With her background in architecture and philosophy, Yvette combines practical aspects of material culture and ecology with theoretical references to cultural criticism. Her multimedia works and books delicately explore the tragicomic tipping points of progress and myth. They draw their energy from the friction between poetry and pragmatism, administration and growth, and industry and craft.
